The coming SAARC summit in Colombo will be a meeting ground to discuss the menace of terrorism and food security issues, and reach a common declaration for the same. The meeting will be held on 2nd and 3rd August.
Earlier, the Standing Committee of the summit which comprises foreign secretaries of the eight SAARC states recently concluded a meeting and agreed on the need for a declaration on food security. They reached to the point after looking into food shortage and rising food costs in sub-continent.
The meeting started with the deliberation from India’s foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon. Eventually, Palitha Kohona, foreign secretary of Sri Lanka was elected its chairman. Export Development and International Development Minister of Sri Lanka, G.L. Peris said that terrorism in Asia is dominant issue.
After the meeting of foreign secretaries, the next meeting of foreign ministers is scheduled on July 31 and August 1, and similar issues are expected to be discussed there too. Delegates are expected to reach onto a common agenda to fight terrorism in the region.
