South African President Thabo Mbeki arrived in Harare on Saturday to hold talks with the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to discuss on the post- presidential election crisis. The meeting has taken place ahead of the emergency summit of the South African Development Community (SADC) in Zambia, where the crisis is to be discussed.
Earlier it was said that Mugabe will not take part in the summit, but he will send a team of ministers to attend it. The result of the presidential vote in Zimbabwe which was held on March 29 has not yet been declared. Zimbabwe has been facing the problems of high inflation, poverty and unemployment and there are strong protests for removing Mugabe.
Sean MCCormack, a US Department spokesperson said that SADC should ask the election commission of Zimbabwe to release the results. He also said that the leaders must raise their voice against the government violence. Meanwhile a Zimbabwean High court judge has declared that he will rule a case in favor of the opposition demanding the election results.
