Russia, late on Saturday defeated defending champions Greece 1-0 at the Wals-Siezenheim Stadium in Salzburg, Austria. The last European champions were eliminated from the Euro Cup 2008 after losing to Russia, its second straight defeat in Group D. Greece will now face Spain on Wednesday in an indifferent final.
A goal by Konstantin Zyryanov in the 33rd minute was enough to give the Russians the lead and stop the advancement of the Greeks in the tournament. Angelos Basinas, Greece Captain after the match remarked that they have nothing to blame but the way they played. He further added that they have no points as yet and on Wednesday, they will play an open game against the Spaniards and hopefully will get something. The Greeks in Euro Cup 2004 had stunned the continent, when the team of no international stars eliminated defending champion France, Czech Republic and then host Portugal in the final.
