Russia is developing Floating Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) which expectedly would start operation in the year 2010. Reports say that a tugboat will be used to move the FNPP, and there would not be any use of nuclear fuel for its transportation. It would look like a small island with an area of between 7.4 and 12.4 acres. The FNPP will be built at Baltiysky Zavod Shipyard in St Petersburg.
Security issues like potential terrorist attacks and physical parameters have been considered well before the execution of the scheme and developing the security system. The source informed that the transformer plants will be situated on shore. However, the plant will be 15 times less powerful than a standard land-based nuclear power plant.
On the issue of Radio activity and concerns world over, Sergei Kirienko, MD, Federal Nuclear Power Agency of Russia said that the floating nuclear power plant with several levels of protection will be much safer than a land-based one. Modern technology to restrict unauthorized entry into FNPP is used along with an establishment of mechanism to protect it from underwater sabotage.
