In the run-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi, the Union Government of India has allocated Rs 678 Crore for the preparation of the participating Indian teams. The approval of the scheme for preparation starting 2008-2009 was done on Thursday, June 12, 2008 by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. There are a number of goals that are being targeted through this scheme such as enhancement of competitiveness in international sports to upgrade the medals tally in international events.
 
Special attention will be paid to the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune this year as well as the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Some other targets of this scheme include providing state-of-the-art training facilities and better competitive opportunities for elite sportspersons and development of a system of selection of sportspersons based on performance. This scheme also supports complete training and exposure to 1,286 athletes in top grade sports competitions in India as well as in foreign lands for 305 days in a year.
