World No 1 Roger Federer is now just a step away from his 16th Grand Slam title. He took over Novak Djokovic to enter the sixth consecutive final at the US Open.

The Swiss player will face Argentine Juan Del Potro Monday in a rain-delayed final.  Argentine Juan Del Potro crushed World No. 3 Rafael Nadal on straight sets of 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to enter the finals.

Federer smacked Djokovic 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 7-5 to make it to the record 21st career Grand Slam title match.

"It was a very difficult match today," said Nadal, who is suffering with an abdominal muscle pull.

"He played really well today, much better than me. In the first two sets, I had lots of chances to keep the score more tightly. But I could do nothing today. I congratulate him."

Federer, who has taken over Djokovic 9 times in 13 of the meetings they had, was really surprised with his own win.

"I was in a difficult position. I had nothing to lose," he said after the win in just over two and a half hours. "We try to practice that shot, but it never works. Maybe it's the greatest shot I ever hit in my life. It's unbelievable."

The semi-final was "an unbelievable match," Federer said. "I had a lot of fun today. Novak had a great event himself, so it was good to come through because he was tough."

The US Open Semi final of Nada against Del Potro has been the worst ever game of his career. Del Potro had showcased an amazing game against the injured World No. 3.

"I can't believe this," said the stunned winner. "It's difficult to speak at the moment. This is my favourite tournament. I cannot believe this moment. I'm so excited. I'm close to achieving my dream to win this tournament."

Six-time Grand Slam winner Nadal had just under 24 hours to rest for the semi after his quarter-final was not concluded until Friday afternoon during a dry spell amid two days of rain.

"This is the best match I've ever played," said Del Potro, 48-11 on the season.
