Croatia’s Mario Ancic, who had defeated Roger Federer during his 2002 Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon, was trounced by the Swiss tennis player on Wednesday, July 2, by 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 during the quarter final round of this year’s tournament. The world number one, Roger Federer will next either play against Feliciano Lopez of
Interestingly Ancic also happens to be the last man to have defeated the mighty Federer on the grass court in 2002. The Swiss tennis pro, who holds the credit of 64 consecutive wins on the grass court, stormed through the first set in just 20 minutes breaking the 24-year-old Croatian in the second and sixth games and giving up just a single point in four service games. Due to rainfall, the players had to halt their game for more than two hours at 6-1 and 1-1 in the second set.
When the game resumed, Mario Ancic seemed to have regained his composure somewhat. Roger Federer, however, acquired a 6-5 lead again following a poor volley and a second double fault of the match on break point in the 11th game. The top seed player converted it into a two-set lead with a ninth ace after only 56 minutes on court. The Swiss player won the game courtesy of his 15th ace with just an hour and 42 minutes of action.
