In an effort to win fifth successive US Open, Roger Federer defeated Thiago Alves by 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round, and reached to third round. This was his 29th consecutive victory in US Open. Last time in the year 2003 he had lost to David Nalbandian in quarter-finals, and thereafter he has not looked back. The match played at main Arthur Ashe Stadium, lasted for 2 hr and 14 minutes.

Federer was in total control of match. He converted 80% of his first serves into points, and hammered 19 aces. Expressing his views on victory he said that he was never really in danger, and for that reason it was actually pretty good for him. He further said that he knew the longer the match would go the more tired he would get.

The year has been a rough year for Federer so far; he lost his premier position this month to Rafael Nadal after being on top for a record 237 weeks. It did not take too much to this champion to defeat Alves who is ranked 137th in the world. However, Federer said that he had never heard of Alves, and so it was a difficult match for him, and he is happy that he is through with it.
