The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which shared the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 with former US vice President Al Gore is going to have Mr. Rajendra Kumar Pachauri as its chairman once again. Mr. Pachauri’s current term will end by July 31st this year. RK Pachauri, who also heads ‘The Energy and Resources Institute’ (TERI) in New Delhi according to official sources has agreed to put in his candidature for a second term.
According to official sources RK Pachauri’s name for a second term as head of the IPCC was endorsed at an executive committee meeting of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva in April. Pachauri was apparently waiting for the WMO executive committee meeting before agreeing to have his name put forward for a second time.
A senior United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) official had made it known that Mr. Pachauri would be chosen the chairman ‘unanimously’ by all the members. After receiving the consent of Mr. Pachauri the government will finally propose his name to head the UN body once more. Mr. RK Pachauri has been the proud recipient of Padma Bhushan in 2001 and was appointed to the IPCC for his first term in April 2002.
