A blast at the Reliance owned Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Ltd (IPCL) plant in the Nagothane town of Raigad district has left four people dead and over forty people injured. All those people who died and injured were contract laborers from the nearby villages. Five labourers are reported to be critical as of now. The fire and the blast are reported to have occurred around 11.20 am on Friday morning.

According to the statement released by the company, a fire broke out in a section of LLDPE plant (No2) at the company’s petrochemical manufacturing division when the routine maintenance work was underway. The plant had been shut for maintenance on Thursday and more than 50 labourers were on the job when the incident occurred.

According to sources, the blast occurred when the vessel of the plant was being flushed. It was revealed that while 25 of the injured have been sent to Harkisondas Hospital in Mumbai, the others are being treated at the local hospitals.
