Even the splendid score of 91 runs made by Gautam Ghambir could not help the Ranji Champion Delhi win the Irani Trophy match. The Delhi team was defeated by 187 runs on the fourth day by Rest of India. The four-day match concluded on September 27 at Vadodara. Chasing a total of 378 to win, the Ranji champion was bundled out for 190 runs. Rest of India was in a commendable position from the very start as they managed to take a 377-run lead at the end of their second innings.
Due to the slow nature of the pitch, Delhi batsmen could not manage to withstand the attack of Rest of India bowlers. Besides Gautam Ghambir, no batsman could play the bowlers of the opposition team. Ghambir took 173 balls to reach the score of 91 runs. In his patience-loaded innings, Ghambir has hit 12 boundaries. He was dismissed by ace leggie Anil Kumble.
Earlier injured Akash Chopra entered into a good partnership with Ghambir raising the hope of Delhi. But with the fall of Chopra at the hands of Zaheer Khan, the tail of Delhi team got exposed to the spin-duo, Harbajhan and Kumble. Harbhajan ended with figures of 4/31 while skipper Kumble claimed 3 for 19 runs.
