Reliance Communications of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) on Sunday, May 18, 2008 announced its road map for launching the competitively priced direct-to-home (DTH) services. The DTH services by Reliance Communications are likely to be introduced across 4,000 towns in the next few weeks. The new service by Reliance Communications will be available under the brand name of Big TV DTH.
2400 towns have already witnessed a trial of the Big TV DTH services. The service is currently available for merely Rs 1000, which is comparatively lower than the other DTH service providers. A company spokesperson refused to give the exact date for the launch of the Big TV DTH service, but remarked that it would be launched in the course of next few weeks.
The company sources have revealed that Reliance is deploying the state-of-the-art mpeg4 technology compared to the mpeg2 technology used by Tata Sky, Dish TV and DD Direct Plus. The company hence will have a strategic edge as it will be capable of offering 240 channels versus the 160 channels that can be viewed in the mpeg2 platform.
