A new study has come up with a startling discovery which will help in saving lives of any. The study has found out how certain proteins kill the blood vessel lining by entering through the bloodstream, which in turn leads to internal bleeding in an uncontrolled way.
Charles Esmon, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) cardiovascular biology researcher, who conducted this study, has found out an antibody that could counter this deadly process.
"This discovery could open the door to new ways to treat soldiers hurt in IED (improvised explosive device) attacks, gunshot wound victims and people who suffer a traumatic injury," said Esmon.
"When we realised that histones were so toxic, we immediately went to work looking for a way to stop their destructive tendencies." The histones keep the DNA coiled and compressed within the cells’ nuclei.
But histones enter the bloodstream via burst cells and cause the damage to lining of blood vessels, which in turn results in uncontrolled internal bleeding , pose threat to life.
The research team has found out that these newly-found antibodies have the potential for preventing histones from destroying the lining of the blood vessels.
"When a patient is suffering from severe bleeds, these antibodies could prevent multi-organ failure," said Esmon.
Pre-clinical trials of these antibodies have proved to have no adverse effects.
Esmon's research has already yielded two FDA-approved drugs.
The findings were published online in Nature Medicine.
