An army hospital in Jammu & Kashmir successfully performed the bone marrow transplant on a 50-year-old soldier suffering from multiple Myeloma. Myeloma is a cancer of white blood cells.

An army spokesman said that Northern Command Hospital based at Udhampur, 66 kms from Jammu, has successfully performed bone marrow transplant on a cancer patient, becoming the first institution in the state to give the specialised treatment.

The transplant was done on October 29 and the patient is responding well, Northern Command spokesman Major S K Rathi said, adding the patient was treated with chemotherapy and after the disease was brought under control, autologous stem cell transplant was done.

A team of medical personnel headed by Lt Col (Dr) Tarun Verma, Clinical Haematologist, performed the transplant procedure in association with the Regional Cancer Centre and Department of Transfusion Medicine of Government Medical College.

In bone marrow transplantation, the diseased bone marrow is destroyed with chemotherapy and replaced with normal marrow cells. It is a highly specialised process, performed in only a few of transplant centres in India.
