Fali S Nariman, senior advocate talking on behalf of government said that the structure was not man made and was made by some superman and he himself destroyed the same. He presented Center’s stand on the issue before a bench of CJI, K G Balakrishnan, and justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal. The constitutional expert was diplomatic in his presentation throughout.
Senior advocate sited incidences and literary evidences from ninth-century Ramayana of Kamban. Also, he gave references from ‘Padma Purana’ to tell the court that if Lord Rama constructed Ram Setu, then he himself destroyed it and there is no setu as of now.
Earlier DMK has created uproar on the issue with similar stand and now UPA seems to do fine tuning with its ally. Nariman said that the issue should be dealt factually and legally in a court of law. And question of 'faith' and other contentious issues should not be raised.
He argued that government has undergone through all the literary and archeological evidence available for both in selecting the present alignment and the dredging site. He concluded that government’s move has come only after considering effects on the marine biosphere in the Gulf of Mannar.
