Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, the ace Indian shooter who won a silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, has been featured in the Time magazine’s list of 100 must watch athletes in the Beijing games this year. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who hails from the state of Rajasthan in India, is the only Indian sportsperson to feature on this list of Time’s '100 Olympic Athletes to Watch'.
The Times list includes names of athletes from various countries who will participate in the impending Beijing Olympics such as those from Australia, China, US and Zimbabwe. Among other prominent names on this list includes that of American basketball player LeBorn James, Chinese diver Guo Jingjing, Jamaica's Asafa Powell, Germany's handball player Pascal Hens and Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice.
The Times magazine has mentioned that 38 year-old double-trap shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is among India’s best hopes to win a medal at the mega sporting event. ‘A colonel in the Indian Army, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is among India's best hopes for a medal in Beijing... He picked up the sport after training as an Army marksman and won a silver in Athens,’ Time stated.
Rathore, on his part, remarked that the preparation had not been an easy task basically because of the shortage of ammunition in the run up to the Olympic Games. ‘We did have some hiccups,’ Rathore has been quoted as saying. The coming forward of a corporate sponsors for some of India's best athletes was termed as ‘a positive change for the country’ by Rathore.
