Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray surrendered before railway police in Thane district in Maharashtra on Monday. This is in connection with a case of instigating violence against north Indian students appearing for railway recruitment exam in October last year.
He surrendered before Kalyan Railway Police as per an order of the Bombay High Court and was immediately put under arrest, an MNS worker said.
Thousands of MNS supporters thronged Kalyan in Thane district, 80 km from the state capital Mumbai, and there was huge security to fend off any trouble.
The high court had last week cancelled the anticipatory bail by a Kalyan court in the matter and ordered Raj Thackeray to surrender by the end of June.
Shortly after his surrender, Thackeray's lawyers moved for bail. It is expected to come up for hearing in the afternoon at the Kalyan court.
