The Indian Premier League match between Delhi Daredevils and the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Ferozeshah Kotla was abandoned due to rain, on Thursday. As a result of this, both the teams were awarded one point each. This also left more than 20,000 spectators who thronged the stadium to watch the competition, frustrated.
With this, Delhi has now moved to the fourth place in the points table, one ahead of Mumbai. But they have also played two games more than Mumbai. The daredevils will now face Mumbai at the same venue. Meanwhile, Kolkata has 11 points from 13 matches and they are out of the IPL already.
The match was abandoned without a single ball being bowled. Earlier, a continuous drizzle made sure that the match was delayed from its scheduled start. The umpires however decided that no play would be possible after they did a thorough inspection of the conditions at hand. This match would have been big; it meant a lot specially to Delhi Daredevils. Delhi needed a win to brighten their chances to get into the semi-finals of the Indian Premier League.
However, as far as the Kolkata Knight Riders are concerned, they were already down and out of the competition; only some complicated calculations could have saved it for them. Delhi, on the other hand can now go ahead in the IPL only if Mumbai and Chennai lose their remaining matches.
Chennai will play the Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers in the last of their two matches while Mumbai is to play against Rajasthan Royals and Bangalore Royal Challengers.
