The government of India on Friday (June 5) appointed Rahul Khullar as the new secretary in the ministry of commerce. The post of commerce secretary was held by GK Pillai who has been appointed as the new Home Secretary.  Rahul Khullar is a 1975-batch IAS officer. Prior to his appointment in the ministry of commerce, Khullar served as the secretary of the Department of Disinvestment.
 
The IAS officer from the Union Territory cadre, Khullar has offered his service as an Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce. During his tenure, Rahul Khullar handled negotiations related to the Doha Round of world trade talks. Meanwhile the outgoing commerce secretary, GK Pillai will take over as an Officer on Special Duty in the home ministry on June 11. 

A 1972 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, Pillai will hold the office of home secretary for two years. He will replace Madhukar Gupta whose tenure has been extended by the previous United Progressive Alliance regime for two months. Pillai will take over as the full-fledged home secretary after Madhukar Gupta retires on June 30.
