In what can be termed as one of the most riveting Grand Slam finals ever, Spain’s Rafael Nadal ousted the king of the Wimbledon, the five-time consecutive winner Roger Federer by 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-7 (8/10), 9-7 on Sunday, July 6, 2008. By doing so, Nadal not only added a first All England Club title to his four French Opens, but also simultaneously terminated the Swiss player’s dream of a historic sixth successive Wimbledon trophy. The win also ended Roger Federer's six-year, 65-match winning streak on grass.

The win carried no less significance for Rafael Nadal either as there have been just two players before him to have clinched the French Open as well as the Wimbledon title the same season. The first was Spain’s Manolo Santana who gave Spain its first men's champion in Wimbledon way back in 1966, whereas Sweden’s Bjorn Borg was the second person who repeated the feat in 1980.

The contest between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer lasted for four hours and 48 minutes, which happens to be the longest Wimbledon final till date. It beat the 1982’s 4:16 record when Jimmy Connors had defeated John McEnroe.
