Tennis champion Rafael Nadal gave Spain its first Olympic gold medal in tennis by ousting Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the final of men's singles on Sunday, August 17 at the ongoing Beijing Olympics. The Spaniard overcame two set points in the second set, held every service game and won 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3 Sunday.

Nadal, infact, was confident about assuming the No.1 ranking on Monday for the first time. For the past four and a half years, it was Roger Federer who had been reigning at this position. Rafael Nadal has lost just one of his 39 previous tennis matches and this includes his win over Roger Federer in both French Open as well as Wimbledon
