After the initial snag, it was hoped that new World number one Rafael Nadal's journey in the 2008 US Open will be a smooth one. But that was not to happen as American Sam Querrey put up a stiff competition against the Spaniard pro on Monday, September 1 before the 55th ranked player finally let Nadal prevail.
Rafael Nadal eventually beat Sam Querrey by 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the quarterfinals of the ongoing US Open. If one had gauged from his reaction solely, it would have seemed that Rafael Nadal had not just advanced to the next round, but won the Grand slam. He sent his red headband flying. He pumped his fists. He basked in the sun in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
'The important thing is to win. When you are not playing your best, the important thing is win,' said Nadal later. Nadal will next be playing against American Mardy Fish. Suddenly Rafael Nadal looks all vulnerable as Fish has got nothing to lose. American player Mardy Fish has just defeated Gael Monfils, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, Monday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
