Rafael Nadal moved into the quarter finals at US Open with his win over Gael Monfils. Nadal defeated Monfils by 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.However Andy Murray stumbled in his match against Marin Cilic and earned a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Croat.
Nadal who is playing his first Grand Slam after a two months hiatus due to his knee injury, had worries coming to the court on Tuesday after suffering an abdominal strain. His problem was nevertheless unnoticeable in the two-and-three-quarter-hours win.
Nadal has climbed up in the ATP rankings with the win, getting closer to top-ranked Roger Federer.
Nadal will face Fernando Gonzalez in his next encounter.
The Chilean claimed his place in quarters defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga by 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-4 on Tuesday.
Nadal was pleased to reach his third New York quarter-final and said he never worries about rankings.
The Spaniard said, "I'm here to play my best and try to enjoy my comeback. To make the quarter-finals is a big result for me. I'm improving every day. It's not easy to come back, but it is much better so far than what I expected."
