Rafael Nadal beat the world no 1 Roger Federer in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 to win the French Open in fourth year in succession, becoming the first man to win four consecutive titles at Roland Garros since Bjorn Borg, 27 years ago. It was also for the third straight time that Nadal had beaten Federer in the final of the only clay court major tournament. Since 1999, it was for the first time at the French Open final on Sunday that the world no 1 lost a set to love.

The Spanish young champion from the very beginning dominated the match, by clinching six consecutive games early in the match. In the Sunday’s French Open final, Federer had 35 unforced errors, five times more than his opponent. Twenty two year old Nadal is the proud player who has won 28 straight matches at the prestigious Roland Garros without a defeat.

The French Open final was Federer’s worst loss in his 173 Grand Slam matches. It was also the shortest Roland Garros men final in terms of games since 1977. Nadal, who was presented the trophy by Bjorn Borg, remarked that he played a perfect match. He stated at the news conference afterwards that he didn’t expect a match like this. The Spaniard added that Roger had mistakes, more than usual and he played aggressive more than usual. Roger, on the other hand admitted that he lost out to the better man. The Swiss player remarked Rafael rightly deserved the victory and he himself will try again at the French Open next year.
