The government of Punjab on September 27, 2008 has announced to name one of the districts of the state after legendary freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh. This decision was taken during his 101st birth anniversary celebration to honor the scarification of freedom fighter. The Chief Minister of Punjab Prakash Singh Badal made this announcement at a function held at the ancestral village of Bhagat Singh. According to the CM, Nawanshahr district of Punjab will be renamed as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. 
 
Nawanshahr district is about 100 km away from Chandigarh. The Punjab CM, PS Badal assured that all the required formalities regarding the renaming of the district will be issued very soon. The arrangement of boards of the offices, milestones, signages in the entire district is in full progress, he further added. This initiative of Punjab government to honor the legendary martyr Bhagat Singh is indeed a matter of proud for the entire nation.
