In tune with Rajasthan’s Palace on Wheels, Punjab Tourism Department will develop its own luxury tourist train. Interestingly, Palace on Wheels in Rajasthan has been a great success and has attracted number of tourists. Earlier, the Punjab government had tried to start it, only to get sabotaged and logged off from the project and now again the project is under consideration.
Geetika Kalha, principal secretary for tourism department of Punjab commented that the train is expected to be a huge hit. It will cover destinations of tourist interest in Punjab including places of religious importance. The train will start from Delhi and will cover destinations such as Anandpur Sahib, Amritsar, Patiala, Pathankot, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kangra, Jaipur and Agra.
Due to delay in the project, the cost has reached to hefty Rs.50 crore from original estimated Rs.20 crore . There is an understanding between Railway and Punjab government to bear operational cost and recover the same in different phases. Strategically enough, the train will cover most distances during night so that tourists can see places during the daytime.
