With a view to bring more tourists to the villages, the government of Punjab has introduced a farm tourism scheme in Rupnagar district. While announcing about the scheme, Additional Deputy Commissioner (development) Kavita Singh stated that under the new scheme farmers and farmhouse owners in the district will be involved in the tourism development. As per the guidelines of the newly launched scheme, a farmhouse owner will play host and guide the visitors along the village areas of the district.

 

The individual who will be enrolled in the scheme is supposed to provide clean, hygienic environment, equipped with modern facilities that meet the standards defined by the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board. Informing more about the farm tourism scheme, Kavita Singh said that the visitors will be provided home-cooked food by the farmhouse owner. Tourists will also be provided comfortable accommodation in the village. The farm owner is also supposed to guide the visitors regarding the local agricultural practices like floriculture, harvesting bee-keeping and dairying.

 

Apart from the farm experience, visitors will also be exposed to local festivals and marriages. The tourism department as well as the district authority will verify the quality of services offered to the tourists. The department will also provide mandatory training and technical know-how to the farm owners. The farms which have agricultural land attached will be given more preference. The information and applications under this scheme are available with the Deputy Commissioner office. The applications will have to be submitted to the chief executive officer, Punjab Tourism, Chandigarh.
