Leading engineering and construction company Punj Lloyd has won a Rs.2.64-billion contract to build up a new airport in Sikkim. The contract from Airports Authority of India is expected to get completed in 24 months. The project work includes the construction of a 30 metre wide runway of 1.7-km length, taxiway, apron drainage system and electrical work on the airport at Pakyong in East Sikkim.
Talking to the media, group chairman Atul Punj said that the company is lokking forward to build Sikkim's first greenfield airport. According to him, it is very important that infrastructural development should take place which will benefit the Indian tourism industry. The state like Sikkim has loads of potential to become a preferred tourist destination as because it is still unexplored. The proposed airport will be built at an altitude of 1,404 metres in Sikkim.
