The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) is all set to kick off from October 12, 2008 at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City at Balewadi, Pune. During the inaugural ceremony, Indian swimming sensation Virdhawal Khade will hold the national flag for the Indian contingent. About 1,300-odd participants from 71 countries are supposed to participate in this year's mega event. The city is ready to host the Game as all the major tasks have been accomplished. About Rs 350 crore has been invested to renovate the sports complex which is located some 20km from Pune station.
The construction of game village is almost over. The rooms for athletes are well furnished and have air-conditioning facility. The sports science centre and the new hostel are also ready for the athletes. Talking to media, organizing committee chairman, Suresh Kalmadi claimed that the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City will turn out to be the best venue of the country. The Pune city is reported to be engrossed with commonwealth game fever. Examinations of several schools of the city have been postponed for the games.
