The President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa took the control of the media ministry in his own hands on January 1, 2009. As per the director of the government information department Anusha Palpita, the president took over the media ministry of the country and appointed former media minister Anurapriyadarshana Yapa as minister of investment promotion.

Meanwhile the former minister of investment promotion Sarath Amunugama will hold the office of home affairs and public administration. Apart from holding the ministry of mass media and information of Sri Lanka, President Rajapaksa is also the minister of defence, finance and nation building. The president is the commander-in-chief of the Lankan armed forces.

Over the last couple of months, the armed forces of Sri Lanka have been engaged in serious combat with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Report says that the Lankan forces are advancing from several directions to capture the last bastions of the LTTE in the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts in the north.

Only a few months ago, the Lankan forces were alleged of killing Tamils. The leaders in India's Tamil Nadu raised massive protest against that injustice. DMK chief M Karunanidhi even threatened to withdraw his support from the central government unless it takes any action against the killings of Tamils.
