President Pratibha Patil who is on her first official tour to Jammu & Kashmir, addressing the second convocation of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu called for a second green revolution in the country. She recalled the times of India’s first green revolution in 1960, when the country’s import had reached to an alarming position.
In the backdrop of the increasing gap between the demand and supply of food grains, Pratibha Patil stressed on the need for a second green revolution. The President remarked at SKUAST that there is a need to enhance the agricultural production with the help of new research, technology and rationalized use of fertilizers. She asserted that the scientists, researchers and farmers need to make a coordinated effort in this direction. Governor of J&K SK Sinha and chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also reiterated what the President had said and voiced concern over the shrinking agricultural land across the country and especially in J&K.
