Maoist leader Prachanda said that the new coalition government would seek to strengthen Nepal's ties with India. He said that the government would work hard to establish 'new unity on a new basis' with India. It is to be noted that the Communist Part of Nepal Maoist (CPN-M) emerged as the single largest party in Nepal after the results of the 601 member special assembly was declared on Thursday, 24 April, 2008. The Maoists bagged 220 seats but fell short of the majority. The elected assembly is likely to be formed in May whose life span would be 30 months. Other parties in Nepal have already expressed their unwillingness to join the government headed by the Maoist.

Meanwhile, Prachanda, in aninterview to an English newspaper, said that it is impossible to bring peace and stability in Nepal without the cooperation of India. He further said that any practical leader would understand the above fact. However, Prachanda said that the government will scrap the Indo-Nepal 1950 treaty and replace it with a new one. He said that it is essential because the times have changed and so have the circumstances. He further said that the new treaty would improve the bilateral relationships with India.
