Recent research conducted in UK shows that use of beta blockers like atenolol, inderal and metaprolol for cure of blood pressure may cause diabetes. Doctors in UK reached onto conclusion that these drugs could increase blood sugar in patients suffering from diabetes. Also, they found that in some cases these led to cause of the disease among patients of high blood pressure.
The research was carried out at National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London. According to the researchers the use of beta blockers immensely increases diabetes risk in blood pressure patients. Accordingly, the research promises to determine the baseline predictors of diabetes in blood pressure patients.
However, according to doctor Anoop Misra of Fortis Hospital, blood pressure patients are no longer given beta blocker drugs as frontline therapy. He concluded that these drugs may not only increase blood sugar levels in those who don't have diabetes, but may even worsen sugar control in those with diabetes and also blunt warning symptoms when low sugar occurs.
