On the tenth anniversary of nuclear tests in the Pokhran field range in Rajasthan, Government is planning to set up a War Museum there. Ten years ago, on May 11, 1998, India conducted a series of nuclear tests at the Pokhran range. In fact, the country’s first ever nuclear test was also conducted in the same place on May 19, 1974. The Pokhran area is still kept under high security and public is not allowed to venture in the region.

Ambarish Kumar, district collector Jaisalmer remarked that the authorities are planning to set up a model of the Khetolai village in Pokharan where the nuclear blasts took place. He further added that help of the Army and BSF has been sought to set up a War Museum in the region.

The Pokhran region, which is kept under tight security, has four gates spread over a 3.5 sq km area. The first is known as the Kohinoor Gate while the last is called the Bhoochal Gate. Till now the only memorial dedicated to the historic event is a museum named ‘Shakti Sthal Shaurya Sanghralay’.
