The security forces of Jammu and Kashmir have been put on high alert since yesterday, in wake of Manmohan Singh’s visit to the Valley today for the inauguration of railways in the Anantnag-Qazigund section. Sources have reported that he may also be holding talks with the separatists.
The security has been made more stringent after intelligence sources reported the chances of militant attack during PM’s visit. He will be accompanied by UPA President Sonia Gandhi and Railway minister Mamata Banerjee. Hundreds of troops carrying assault rifles erected barriers and patrolled the streets in Anantnag, where Singh would inaugurate the section and address a rally.
‘‘SPG personnel sanitised the rally venue and the 12-km route between Anantnag and Qazigund,’’ a source said.
Railway official has mentioned that there would not any service from Baramulla.
Sources said the PM was keen to make some headway on Kashmir and could offer several confidence building measures like reduction of troops from urban areas and abrogation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
