Anders Ahlbom who led the study team at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, talking about the ramification of the study says that playing golf can life expectancy for average of five years. He further says that a round of golf means being outside for four or five hours, walking at a fast pace for six to seven kilometers, something which is known to be good for the health. This study also shows that those who played golf were 40 per cent less likely to die at any given age than those who did not play.
According to the report published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports, it is likely that the game in itself has a significant impact on health. Despite the lack of intense physical activity, golf is still healthy. The study also pointed out that a single round of 18 holes usually involves walking more than four miles. The finding applied across all social classes - showing that golfers' better health cannot simply be explained by them being wealthier than average.
Professor Ahlbom concluded that maintaining a low handicap involves playing a lot, so this supports the idea that it is largely the game itself that is good for the health. Although study stressed more on golf playing the significant reason behind longevity, it does not rule out some other factors such as healthy lifestyle, and good living standard of golf players as significant part of them are from well to do families.
