Climate researchers on Thursday, April 24, 2008 revealed that the proposed solution of spraying sulphate particles into the Earth’s stratosphere to reduce global warming could only worsen the current situation. Simone Tilmes of the National Center of Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, revealed that the study undertaken by them shows that, if lot of sulphur is put in the atmosphere, then we get a larger ozone depletion than ever witnessed before.
The study revealed that injecting sulphur would wipe out the Arctic ozone layer and delay recovery of the Antarctic ozone hole by as much as 70 years. Tilmes remarked that while climate change is a major threat, more research is required before society attempts global geoengineering solutions. Tilmes further revealed that the injected sulphate would react with chlorine gases in the cold polar region, eliciting a chemical reaction that would further deplete atmospheric ozone. The study undertaken by her and her colleagues, Tilmes remarked, did not close the door on the idea of artificially cooling the planet, but just raised a ‘flag of caution’.
