Mumbai-based drug company, Piramal Life Sciences Ltd (PLSL) has received the approval of Drug Controller General of India to carry out its clinical examinations on molecule 'P276' for cancer treatment. The company has been permitted to conduct two Phase I/II combination studies for its molecule P276. The studies will help to develop drugs for treating pancreatic, head and neck cancer.
 
During the clinical examination, the company will try to find out the safe and effective dosages of P276 for treating cancer. P276 will be combined with chemotherapeutical drugs and measure its effects on pancreatic and head and neck cancer patients. As per an estimate of the company, in India there are over 2,00,000 cases of pancreatic, head and neck cancer. The company also found out that throughout the world about 6,00,000 people are suffering form such types of cancers. 

According to Piramal Group Director, Ms Swati Piramal, the company is also carrying out such studies in other countries such as the US and Australia. She informed that an investment of Rs 5-10 crore will be required to accomplish these studies. Molecule P276 is effective in retarding the growth of key enzymes involved in the uncontrolled division and multiplication of cancer cells. The molecule has been developed to treat those cancers, which do not have adequate treatment options.
