Following the recent incident of a giraffe getting electrocuted while being transported from the Alipore zoo to the Nandankanan zoo in Bhubaneswar, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has asked the Indian government to close down the Alipore Zoo. Members of PETA have threatened that they will stage a protest rally infront of the Alipore Zoo on Wednesday 28 May to condemn the giraffe’s death.

The members of PETA informed that because the Alipore zoo was not following the stipulated rules and guidelines, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) had sought to shut it down in 2004. It was further informed that PETA has already conducted a research in the Alipore Zoo, brought to light the plight of the animals caged there and requested the Central Zoo Authority to take stern action against those guilty.

PETA revealed that primate expert Jane Goodall had visited the Alipore Zoo in 2007 and was shocked to see the deplorable condition in which the chimp was caged. PETA's Campaign Coordinator Sachin Bangera, after citing a number of instances when rules were violated by the Alipore Zoo, remarked that it was high time the government closed down this zoo as its inmates were suffering.
