About 57 people have been killed and over 100 injured when a massive blast ripped through a busy market of Peshawar on Wednesday afternoon. This comes just a few minutes after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Pakistan on a three-day itinerary.
The toll in the blast that occurred in Meena Bazar in Peshawar, the capital of the restive North West Frontier Province (NWFP), has climbed to 57, hospital sources told Geo TV. More than 100 people have been reported to be in critical condition and reports suggest more casuality.
Panic-stricken shopkeepers came to the rescue of the injured, including children and women. They joined security personnel in digging through the debris in the desperate search for survivors.
The injured have been moved to Lady Reading Hospital and other hospitals.
District Coordination Officer Sahibzada Anees said rescue teams were facing difficulties as several shops caught fire and the fire fighters are finding it difficult to enter the alleys as they have been completely choked.
