About 87 people have been killed and 200 plus have been injured after a massive bomb blast went off in Peshawar today afternoon.

Doctors who are in an attempt to save the injured have mentioned that the death toll could go up. They also mentioned that of the 200 injured many more may lose their lives.

Pakistani media reported that a building in the congested locality of Meena Bazar collapsed. A mosque bore the brunt. The windows of buildings were shattered. Several vehicles and around 15 shops were burnt.

The blast had happened in an area where majority of the people were women. Reports mention that those who were killed were mostly women.

Once the people recovered from the shock, they started the rescue operations. They were joined by security forces, who made their way through the debris to hunt for the survivors.

The sight of mutilated bodies and screaming people has left the people frozen.

The bomb disposal squad blamed a car bomb for the disaster. Xinhua news agency quoted an eyewitness as saying that a parked car exploded, raining death and destruction.

Police fear that about 25 people are present under the collapsed buildings.

District Coordination Officer Sahibzada Anees said rescuers faced difficulties in accessing the area because the burning shops were located in congested lanes.

The markets of Peshawar remained closed after the incident.

President Asif Ali Zardari denounced the blast. NWFP Chief Minister Amir Hyder Khan Hoti ordered inquiry into the blast.
