Providing credibility to strong whispers about President Pervez Musharraf being made to relinquish power, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari recently remarked that the Pakistani President may get impeached under democratic process incase he refuses to quit. These remarks were made by Zardai during a press conference convened at Medina, in which even the Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani was present.
Zardari pointedly said that only the Parliament has an authority of sending the President as well as the Prime Minister back home. Asif Ali Zardari further informed that he had already suggested the Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to quit office. The PPP co-chairman emphasized upon the fact that if Musharraf refuses to budge, then the Parliament is the supreme institution and it has full authority to decide about his future. The judges, it was informed, will be restored through constitutional package.
This development follows the Pakistani President’s recent statement on Saturday, June 7, when he said that he nurtures no instant plans to resign or go into exile. Mr Pervez Musharraf had, however, also added that he is ready to face impeachment and any decision made by the parliament. ’I won’t resign in the current situation. I will live and die in Pakistan, there is no other way,’ Musharraf is said to have told some journalists.
