Personalized HIV therapy has been developed; a joint research team from the institutes of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), Universite de Montreal has said that they have developed a personalized immunotherapy to fight HIV/AIDS. This immunotherapy based on the properties of dendritic cells will alert the immune system.
Accordingly, the surfaces of these manipulated dendritic cells present an increased number of HIV proteins, and then allows them to stimulate the cytotoxic response of a certain type of immune cell called CD8+ lymphocytes. However, at this stage the technique doesn't cause side effects or an undesirable auto-immune response.
Dr Jean-Pierre Routy, from MUHC commented on the feat that their approach is unique in the world, and no one else has yet developed customized immunotherapy using the virus from individual patients. However, the experimental technique is time taking and expensive. Conclusively, scientists were looking for an AIDS vaccine for long, and new discovery is tinny step towards that.
