The online payment site Paypal, in order to combat phishing, has planned to block older versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer and other unsafe browsers. The customers, according to Paypal, will first be informed that their browser is unsafe to use and then later be blocked if they will continue using it. Phishing is an attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information such as passwords, user names and credit card details. Paypal’s attempt to block unsafe browsers is aimed at curbing phishing.
Pay pal has decided to obstruct unsafe browsers or browsers who do not use anti-phishing tool. PayPal is interested in implementing the new ‘Extended Verification’ SSL certificates used by the upcoming Mozilla Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 7. EV SSL will highlight the address bar in green, when the site has been certified.
Paypal’s chief information security officer, Michael Barret and senior director of risk management for Europe, Dan Levy authored a paper titled, ‘ A Practical Approach to Managing Phishing’, in which they outlined specific guidelines to control phishing. These included preventing fraudulent email from getting into users in-boxes, prosecute fraudsters to the full extent of the law and focusing on brand and consumer recovery among others.
