A new study related to cancer has proved that a diet which is rich is high fat such as red meat and dairy products can lead to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. The research was published in Journal of the National Cancer Institute on 26 Jun, 2009.

Rachael Z Stolzenberg-Solomon, PhD, who is from the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda told that the research team had analysed about 500, 000 people for this study from National Institute of Health – AARP Diet and Health Study.

These participants had completed a questionnaire during 1995 as well as 1996 which was related to frequency of use of these fat based products in food. These people were then followed for about 6 years so that the health outcomes could be traced.
It was noticed by the research team that men who had consumed high levels of animal fats had 53% more chances of developing pancreatic cancer where as women who had high intake of the animal fats were subjected to a 23% higher risk of developing cancer.
The study also proved that people who used high levels of saturated fats as a part of their diet had 36% more chances of developing pancreatic cancer when compared to those who used lower levels of saturated fats.
