The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is more popularly known the world over as Oscar awards, has reportedly sued a well known film company of Tamil Nadu in India for using the name ‘Oscar’. The Academy's communications chief, Leslie Unger confirmed this news on Thursday 22 May. He informed that on the charge of unauthorized use of a name and symbol similar to the Oscar’s, two applications of trademark violations have been filed against Oscar Films Private Limited before the trademark authorities.

Leslie Unger said that the name and logo of the Tamil Nadu company, Oscar Films Private Limited owned by film director cum producer, V. 'Oscar' Ravichandran is remarkably similar to those of the Academy’s and its award. He further underscored that this is disadvantageous to their famous trademark rights and so it is being deliberated as to what further measures can be taken.

The logo of the Oscar Films Private Limited is a replica of the Oscar statue. These remakes were made by Leslie Unger in response to a query about proceedings against Tamil film director V. 'Oscar' Ravichandran who owns Oscar Films Private Limited. The said Tamil director was unavailable for comment, but people known to him have said that his company will meet the Academy’s legal challenge at appropriate forums.
