The amendments made to Organs Transplantation Act have received the approval of the Government. These amendments will enable the transplantation process to be more transparent. It will also ensure that any person who violates the Act will receive stringent punishment.

"Cabinet has approved the proposals of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to amend the provisions of the Act and also for imposing stringent penalties on persons or hospitals violating the provisions," told the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni after the Union Cabinet meeting in New Delhi.

Even though there are regulations for monitoring organ transplantation, reports related to the trade of human organs in India have always been making the news. So, people felt that the Act had failed to act against the organ trade, which has even deteriorated the conditions of people, who genuinely needed organ transplants.  This also made the process of organ donation a loner one.

The Transplantation of the Human Organs Act, 1994 became effective on February 4, 1995 in the State of Goa, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra, after which all the states, barring Jammu and Kashmir, adopted it.
