Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) clinched the top position in pool A in the 85th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament. They made an unbeaten record with a dramatic 4-3 win over Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL).
ONGC, having won all their four league matches, finished with 12 points ahead of BPCL who have nine points from three wins. Both the teams have already qualified for the semi-finals.
ONGC will face Army XI which is No.2 in Pool B and BPCL will take on Indian Oil, the No.1 in Pool B in the semi-finals scheduled for Saturday after Friday's rest.
The goals for ONGC came from Jagwant in the 20th minute, Bikash in 24th minute, Pramod in 68th minute and Diwakar Ram in the 70th minute.
For BPCL, Jarnail Singh scored in the 31st and 60th minute and Prabhdeep Singh in the 55th minute. The BPCL defenders were rather cumbersome in their movements to allow ONGC forwards considerable freedom.
Later, in the concluding league fixture, the Indian Railways overcame Punjab National Bank by 3-2 to finish third in pool B. Mahendra, Kullu and Kuldeep Singh scored in the 2nd, 55th and 60th minute for the Railways while PNB replied through Damandeep Singh and Yudhvir Singh in the 13th and 43rd minute.
