The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeated Indian Overseas Bank by 3-1 on Monday to enter the semis of Murugappa Gold Cup hockey. The win made them the first team to reserve a berth in the semi-finals of the 85th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament. This was also their third consecutive win in the tournament.
ONGC progress to the fourth round was confirmed when Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) overcame defending champions Air India by 3-0 in another pool A match. The result knocked out Air India from semis.
In pool B, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) confirmed their progress to the semi-finals by remaining unbeaten after three outings as they defeated Punjab National Bank by 4-1. ONGC dominated the game but missed many scoring chances.Pramod gave the team 1-0 lead at the sixth minute. Penalty corner specialist Diwakar Ram came well with a drag-flick in the ninth before converting a penalty stroke in the 20th to give ONGC a 3-0 advantage.
In the second half, IOB made concerted efforts and pulled one back through Senthil who flicked home a penalty stroke in the 40th minute. Both the teams played attacking hockey which eventually ended in favour of ONGC.
