The Beijing Olympic flame finally reached the highest peak of the world, Mt Everest early on Thursday, May 08, 2008. The mountaineering squad celebrated the historic event atop the 8,844 meters peak holding the Chinese national flag, the Olympic five rings flag and a Beijing Olympics flag. Repeating the slogan for the Olympics, ‘One World, One Dream’ a climber ascended the Mount Everest. Another climber on reaching the highest peak added that ‘we have lit the torch on top of the world’.
The Olympic flame had been carried to Mt Everest in a special metal canister, which had been designed to withstand the windy, frigid and oxygen thin Himalayan air. The 19 member climbing team reached the highest peak of the world exactly three months before the August 8 opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing. The 19 member final Everest Olympic run team comprised of both ethnic Han Chinese and Tibetans. The final torch bearers, a woman named Cering Wangmo as well as the captain of the mountaineering squad are both Tibetans.
